About Emory & Henry College
Lisa Bratton
Lisa D. Bratton

Class of 1988
B.A., Mathematics/Education
Eighth grade math teacher, Ross N. Robinson Middle School, TN

Lisa Bratton is one of a long line of family members to attend Emory & Henry College. She first heard about the school from her sister-in-law, who attended Emory & Henry while Lisa was in high school. Following in her footsteps, Lisa and her then-boyfriend (now her husband) David both attended Emory & Henry, along with Lisa's two brothers, Greg and Steven.

Lisa came to Emory & Henry as an aspiring lawyer, having worked with a lawyer in a mentoring program during high school. Since E & H had no pre-law degree at the time, Lisa began taking math courses, thinking that she would use an undergraduate degree in mathematics to get into law school.

"Then I took a course with Dr. B.G. Raines. He pulled me aside after class one day and asked me if I had ever considered teaching mathematics. He felt that I had the personality and ability to teach and encouraged me to at least observe some classes at county schools in the area. I did, and was hooked."

During her 14 years as a mathematics teacher, Lisa has been awarded the Kingsport City School's Middle School Teacher of the Year. She currently teaches eighth grade math at Ross N. Robinson Middle School in Kingsport, Tennessee, and still loves her job. "I owe all of it to the people that have made and are making E & H a wonderful place to receive a quality education."
