International studies and psychology major
Hometown: Lebanon, VA

Before attending college, Kayla Carter faced the difficult question that most high school seniors face: What will be my major?

Now, after two years at Emory & Henry, she has solidified many of her ambitions and, in the process, has traveled widely and distinguished herself both in the classroom and on the tennis court.

Kayla began her college experience by taking courses in areas in which she knew she had an interest: international studies and psychology. She discovered that she not only enjoyed these courses, but also was invigorated by them.

Her international studies classes stirred her desire to travel. So, in the summer of 2005, after taking courses in the Chinese language, she completed a study abroad program in China. She plans to travel to Eastern Europe in 2006.

She now pursues a double major in international studies and psychology. And when she's not working toward that goal, she's competing successfully on the tennis court. Since her first year at Emory & Henry, Kayla has been either first or second seed on the E&H women's tennis team and was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 2005.

The dual focus on academics and athletics "is a difficult balance," but Kayla makes the best of it. "It can be very hard," said Kayla. "But it definitely makes time fly by."

For Kayla, one of the most important aids to her success has been the strong support of her E&H professors. "I didn't think college was a place where professors cared about you - they just gave you a grade," Kayla said. "It's a lot different here."

The young woman who just a few years ago had no idea what she would do with her college career now has plans to go to graduate school for psychology. She is very much on her way toward her goals, taking with her valuable life lessons learned at Emory & Henry College.
