Olivia Bailey’s dream of becoming a reporter began with “The Funky Monkey,” the school newspaper she created and distributed during fifth grade. As a student enrolled in Emory & Henry’s mass communications department, she is a step closer to reaching her lifelong goal.

Bailey has gained hands-on professional experience on campus as a reporter, editor and producer for EHC-TV, WEHC radio and the campus newspaper, The Whitetopper. She recently completed an internship at the CNN Headquarters in Atlanta.

“CNN was an incredible experience,” says Bailey, who currently is studying in Ireland while doing an internship with Jobcare, a nonprofit organization that assists people facing long-term unemployment. “I love gathering news and hearing people’s stories. I gained confidence while I was in Atlanta, and the energy in the newsroom really motivated me to challenge myself and chase my dreams. Emory & Henry has provided a good foundation.”

Bailey credits her professors at Emory & Henry for challenging her to be a better communicator and for teaching her to think critically about important issues.

“It's cliché, but Emory & Henry is a place that will change your life if you let it,” Bailey says. “If you come with an open mind and heart, you will find your life transformed. It will challenge you and almost break you at points, but it is never more than you can handle. And if it feels like it, someone is always cheering for you at the end.”
