Melissa Taverner

Degrees: Ph.D., University of Virginia; M.S., the University of Reading in England; B.A., Randolph-Macon Woman's College

Dr. Taverner focuses her research on the gypsy moth, a major insect pest of deciduous forests in the eastern United States, and the pawpaw tree, a common understory tree found in the southeastern United States. Her other interests include microbiology, population biology, and environmental studies. In 1996 and 2002, she was honored with the college's Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2008, Dr. Taverner was awarded the McConnell Chair in Biology.

A native of Southwest Virginia, Professor McConnell's interests include herpetology (salamanders and snakes) and tropical biology. Each spring, McConnell offers a field biology course to Costa Rica.

Dr. Fleet's research interests include genetics, genomics and molecular biology. Her work focuses on transcriptional regulation of the production of growth hormone in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. She also has experience teaching science writing.
