Meet faculty

Emory & Henry College offers a quality music curriculum in combination with a strong foundation in the liberal arts. Classes, ensembles, performances, and private lessons offer musical experiences for majors and non-majors alike, and a talented and dedicated music faculty ensures personal attention to each individual student’s musical growth. The music department seeksto provide opportunities for students to grow into independent, informed, and creative musicians who will serve as advocates for our art in and out of the music profession. Our graduates have gone on to great success as professional performers and teachers at all levels.
Because music is an integral part of the social fabric of the E&H community, we hope that you will join us and make music a part of your E&H experience.

Degree Program
Whether you are interested in attending graduate school in music or beginning a career as a public school music teacher, a major in music at E&H can lead you toward those goals with a specialization in any of the following areas:

  • Music Performance (vocal, piano, brass)

  • Music - Liberal Arts

  • Music Education

A minor in music is also available to those who wish to major in another area but are interested in studying music beyond the fundamental, introductory level.

Music Performances
Opportunities to make music on and off campus are available to everyone at E&H. Our performing ensembles have achieved a reputation for excellence throughout the region, frequently touring nationally and internationally. Participation in any of the following ensembles is possible with permission of the director:

  • Concert Choir

  • Festival Choir

  • Small Choral Ensembles (Men’s Chorus, Women’s
    Chorus, Chamber Singers)

  • Opera Workshop

  • Stadium Band

  • Brass Ensemble

  • Trumpet Ensemble

  • Brass Quintet

  • Woodwind Ensemble

  • Guitar Ensemble

Any student taking private lessons in voice, piano, organ, guitar, brass, strings, percussion, or woodwinds is eligible, at the discretion of the instructor, to participate in monthly Music Hour Performances. An annual Music Department Honors Recital involves student performers, selected by the music faculty, who exhibit high levels of musicianship and artistry. Internationally and nationally known guest artists hosted on campus through the E&H Arts Series provide students a chance to hear and experience performers at the top of their profession.

Music Courses
Music Department courses involve critical examination of the language, ideas and contexts of various types of music, providing the E&H student with a foundation for making informed musical judgments. Whether you intend to become a performer or increase your enjoyment as an audience member, there are courses in the music department that will guide you toward your goals. Music history, music theory, and church music classes are offered every year, as well as private lessons in a variety of areas. Topical courses such as Lyric Diction, Piano Literature and Pedagogy, Conducting, Jazz History, and others are offered on a frequent basis.

Music Facilities
The Music Department is housed in Byars Hall. Faculty studios, practice rooms with a number of upright and grand pianos, a choral rehearsal hall, and an instrumental rehearsal hall are located on the new addition/renovation of the ground floor. On the first floor, a music technology classroom consists of 13 digital, MIDI-capable keyboards and Macintosh computer stations. State of the art notation, eartraining, and recording/editing software are installed in this lab.

The Memorial Chapel is the Music Department’s primary performance space. Its beautiful sanctuary provides an excellent venue for student/faculty recitals, choral/brass ensemble performances and guest artists. A Steinway “D” grand piano is located in the sanctuary, a memorial gift from the family of Margaret Gatherum Smith (E&H ’71). Memorial Chapel also houses a 24-rank pipe organ, completed by Randall Dyer in January 1997.

A new Center for the Arts is currently planned for the College. This new space will include a professional music venue for use by guest artists, faculty, and student music performances.
