Emory & Henry is a liberal arts college which has built a reputation for offering strong pre-medical preparation through rigorous academic work. Our pre-medical students may select a major from any of the college’s departments, although most choose an area within the Science Division such as biology or chemistry. Whatever major you choose, you will find exceptional educational quality at Emory & Henry.
Degree Program
Your course of study will depend on the major you choose, so it is important to make early, careful plans about course selection. The health professions advisor and members of the Health Professions Committee will provide you with information about various areas of health and medical work and will talk candidly with you about the rigors of medical school. They will assist you in planning your course work to fit your career choice.
The specific courses required by most medical schools follow a particular sequence, making it important for students to get into the foundation courses during their first year. At the most basic level, you will need to plan on taking courses to meet minimum course requirements that are nearly universal among medical schools and include calculus, biology, chemistry, general physics, and English.
Other factors that will be considered by medical schools are your grades in these courses and others, evidence of experience in and knowledge of the health field as obtained through summer jobs and health practicums, evidence of leadership and initiative, and good character. Because Emory & Henry is a small college that stresses student participation, involvement, and service, our campus provides the ideal climate for you to build a good record of success. You will be asked to develop a personal dossier, and you will be given the opportunity to participate in at least one health professions practicum during the academic year with a health professional and to become a member of the Health Professions Club.
Facilities
The Science Division is located in the most modern building on campus, McGlothlin-Street Hall, completed in fall of 2000. State-of-the-art laboratories and equipment such as DNA sequencers, an inverted light microscope, and a liquid scintillation counter are available to you beginning your first year.
Other equipment includes a thermal cycler-PCR (molecular), refrigerated centrifuge and ultracentrifuge, microcentrifuges, a UV-vis spectrophoto- meter, a GC Mass spectrometer, and electrophoretic equipment for both nucleic acids and proteins. A cold room and research labs for faculty and students are also available.
Support Programs
You may join Emory & Henry’s active Health Professions Club, which holds monthly meetings with health providers as guest speakers, organizes special events, and sponsors annual trips to various medical schools.
Pre-Health Vocations Scholarships are designated for pre-med students, some for entering first-year students and others for upperclass students. Upperclass students also have the opportunity to participate in a practicum related to a health profession.
Career Opportunities
If you are interested in a medical degree, there are many specializations you can consider within the general field of medicine: family practice, obstetrics, surgery, anesthesiology, occupational medicine, epidemiology, and sports medicine. You do not need to make a final decision about such specialties until after entering medical school, but Emory & Henry’s health and medical professions advisor will be glad to provide you with information about these areas of study.
Along with these choices within the medical area, numerous other health and medical fields may be of interest to you. Pharmacology, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, medical technology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy are among the fields which have been pursued by E&H graduates in the past decade.
