Dr. Lou Fincher, Dean, School of Health Sciences
“Lou brings to this program a solid resume of experience in teaching and managing health science programs as well as a strong sense of the clinical and hospital environment into which our students will graduate.”
Jake Schrum, President, Emory & Henry College
Leading our School of Health Sciences is our outstanding Dean, Dr. Lou Fincher. Dr. Fincher, who holds a Doctor of Education Degree in Human Performance Studies from the University of Alabama, stepped into her role as Dean of the School of Health Sciences on June 1, 2014. Since that time she has worked exhaustively for the College and was integral in developing the School of Health Sciences campus, including recruiting many of our excellent team of department chairs, and paving the way for our graduate programs.
She has more than 30 years of teaching and health care experience. Before beginning work at the Marion, Va. campus of Emory & Henry College, Fincher served as chair of the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Arlington (2009-2014), founding program director for UT Arlington's CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Program (2000-2009), and president and C.E.O. of the Joe. W. King Orthopedic Institute at the Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston, Texas (1998-2000).
Fincher is also very active in professional service, particularly in the area of health professions education. As the chair for the NATA Professional Education Committee, she coordinated the development of the fifth edition of the Athletic Training Education Competencies. This publication establishes the knowledge, skills and abilities that accredited athletic training education programs must include in their academic programs. She also serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Sports Rehabilitation, as well as manuscript reviewer for several other peer-reviewed health professions journals.
