Info on Fall Prevention

Falls

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries of adults age 65 and older. Everyday 10,000 people in the United States turn 65 years old. More than 1 in 5 Americans will be over the age of 65 by 2030.  The number of childhood falls and fall related injuries are  unknown as usually fall related childhood injuries are reported as concussions or broken bones.

In 2015 the emergency medical system (EMS) received 452 fall related calls for Smyth County, Virginia. There is a need for collaborative efforts to develop prevention and management strategies to address fall risk factors in our community.

  • Why are falls occurring?
  • Who is affected?
  • How can we prevent falls?
  • How can we protect individuals from injury and life changing events?
  • What are effective strategies to promote independence, life skills, confidence, safety and well-being in our community?

The Fall Prevention Center’s goals are to engage sustainable community strategies to promote quality of life and health, education, outreach and resources.
