Marion, VA – Sam McKinney, has been named the executive director of the Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Center. The mission of the Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Center (SWVAAHEC) is to provide education, information, training, and services to improve health outcomes in Southwest Virginia. SWVA AHEC primarily focuses on rural health care workforce development to meet the needs of communities and health care professionals.
Mr. McKinney most recently comes to SWVA AHEC from the Community In Schools of Southwest, where he served has Executive Director. Before that, McKinney spent 30 years in public education with his last 7 years as the Director of Career and Technical Education for the Smyth County Schools.
Howard Chapman, SWVA AHEC Board chairman, explains “We are excited to have Sam on join us in promoting Medical Education and Southwest Virginia. With his knowledge of the area, his background of Career and Technical Education and his experience in workforce development, we feel he will be a tremendous asset to our organization and our mission.
Mr. McKinney's background is well-aligned with the SWVA AHEC mission. In addition to his expertise in Career and Technical Education, his experience includes community partner in workforce development. He is especially interested in working with the school systems to help develop programs that will assist students in SWVA to experience different professions associated with the health care professions. He brings a strong commitment to assisting the academic and community partnerships and a belief that collaboration and communication between the communities are extremely important to accomplish the goals and mission of the Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Center.
