UVA's MHIRT Program

The UVA MHIRT program is an NIH funded intensive summer research training and professional development opportunity available to under-represented minority students interested in pursuing careers in the health sciences. The 10 week mentored research assistant program offers a pre-departure week at UVA, 8 weeks in country at one of our partner sites, followed by a data analysis week at UVA. International sites rotate annually and include St. Kitts and Nevis, South Africa, and Uganda. Applicants must be be a member of an underrepresented health disparity population. This includes racial and ethnic minorities, individuals from rural areas, or individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. All applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent residents and an undergraduate student in the fall semester following the summer of program participation. The UVA MHIRT program focuses on a variety of research areas aimed at addressing global health disparities. Topics include non-communicable diseases, malaria, medical pluralism, and young adolescent sexual and reproductive health. You will be mentored by faculty who are experts in their field and have the support of a graduate mentor throughout your MHIRT experience. The program is looking for hard working and emotionally mature students with a strong work ethic and an interest in the health sciences are encouraged to apply. They expect a high level of professionalism and an ability to live and work in an environment where you will cook daily, walk to your research site, have limited internet access and experience high temperatures with no air conditioning. You will gain real-world international research experience, have opportunities to present at national conferences, and submit abstracts. Previous students have become Fulbright scholars, NIH fellows, and gained acceptance to highly regarded graduate and medical schools. During the summer, program related expenses will be covered including housing, insurance, and all travel. You will also receive a stipend. The deadline to apply is January 4, 2017.
