The Emory & Henry College greenhouse was established in 2006 through the work of Dr. George Treadwell and the support of generous donors. It contains a diverse collection of plants used for teaching taxonomy, as well as space for student and faculty research. Tours are available by arrangement with any of the Biology department faculty. Below is a listing of each of the botanical groups represented in the greenhouse collection, with links to photos and information about each individual species and its classification.

Classifications of land plant diversity

Land plants are divided into large groups, or divisions, based on their evolutionary relationships to each other.  The simplest, non-vascular, non-seed plants include the Bryophyta and Marchantiophyta.  The vascular non-seed plants include Lycopodiophyta and Polypodiopsida.  Among seed-bearing plants are the Cycadophyta, Pinophyta (conifers), and Gnetophyta.  The greatest diversity is seen in the Angiosperms, flowering plants which are further subdivided into loose groups such as the monocots, eudicots and magnoliids, based on a combination of DNA sequence data and morphological features such as number of cotyledons (embryonic leaves) and arrangement of vasculature.  You can see a phylogenetic tree showing these relationships in the chart below.

The angiosperms, or flowering plants, are further subdivided into into the larger clades, such as the asterids and rosids, and then into the orders and families listed below. The schematic shows the phylogenetic relationships among some of the main angiosperm families in our collection, compared to a Pinophyta as an outgroup.
