The Student Art Association (SAA) was founded in the Spring of 1995. The organization is dedicated to improving the visual arts climate of the Emory & Henry community. Students regularly sponsor exhibitions in the Byars Gallery in Byars Hall. They also organize trips to major cities so that students can see art. During the spring semester of 2006, the group went to Atlanta. The students have also organized trips in the past to Washington, D.C.
The SAA sponsors silent art auctions of student and faculty work. The proceeds are used for Juried Exhibitions open to students across campus. Previous winners of this exhibit have included Brenda Kiekhefer, Mark Wankel, Vaughn Garland, and Lynn Taylor.
The SAA has also donated monies toward the framing of student art for permanent displays around campus. The organization has also sponsored numerous cookouts and gatherings dedicated toward opening a dialogue concerning issues in the visual arts.
The SAA is open to all E&H students regardless of major. Students who are not able to attend the fall-semester organizational meeting should contact the president. Students may join at any time during the year. The organization receives partial funding from the Student Government.
