McGlothlin Center for the Arts Main Stage
The Emory & Henry College Symphonic Band will perform a wide variety of contemporary and classical numbers for their annual spring concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 20. The concert will be held in the Main Stage Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts on campus.
The Chilhowie Warrior Band has been invited to participate in the concert this year.
The collaborative concert is another indication of the partnership being established by the Chilhowie High School band and Emory & Henry College. The performances of the two bands will offer the high school students a rare opportunity to practice with the college-level musicians.
Emory & Henry is a new sponsor and contributor to the Chilhowie Apple Festival Band Competition, a legendary event held each fall in Chilhowie.
“We will be playing a wide variety of music from classic symphonic literature such as "American Overture," an orchestral transcription of the “Poet and Peasant Overture,” and some new pieces for band as well,” said Dr. Matthew Frederick, director of the Emory & Henry College Symphonic Band.
According to Frederick, the Emory & Henry Symphonic Band concert will feature 44 members, the largest symphonic band that Emory & Henry has ever had. The two bands, Emory & Henry and Chilhowie, will combine to close the concert with more than 80 band members on the stage.
“We started preparations for this concert right after the marching season last fall, so it takes time to put this all together. We hope that the audience will enjoy the afternoon of music as well as appreciate the hard work and dedication of the students,” said Frederick.
