Emory & Henry College offers choral performance opportunities for all students interested in singing.
Concert Choir is open to all students on campus through a simple audition. This choir typically has 45-55 singers and performs 2-3 concerts per semester including annual regional tours and international tours every four years.
Chamber Choir is the premiere choral ensemble open to all students through audition. This choir is comprised of 14-18 singers and performs 3-4 concerts per semester including annual regional tours and international tours every four years.
Opera Workshop is a course designed to explore the process and production of opera repertoire. Students learn, stage, and perform opera arias and scenes with props, costumes, and light scenery. The class is open to all students (often taken by vocal music and music theatre majors) and is offered in the spring semester.

The annual E&H Invitational Choral Festival hosts 3-5 regional high school choirs for a day of joint rehearsals, clinics, workshops, and performances with nationally-renowned guest conductors. Participation in this festival is through invitation only and is identified as a strong contribution to the choral arts in the southwest Virginia region. The festival is typically held in late January in the new Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts on the Emory & Henry College’s historic campus in Emory, Va.

In 2015 we proudly began a new tradition with the E&H Marching Band. This dynamic ensemble added a new level of excitement to all home football games and throughout the community with their performances. The E&H symphonic band is made up of select students and performs throughout the academic year in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. The ensemble performs diverse and challenging repertoire of music that is both challenging and rewarding for the performers. Membership is open to all students by audition.
The E&H Brass Quintet is the premier instrumental touring ensemble of the college. This ensemble regularly tours throughout the region serving the college in the areas of recruiting and outreach. The group performs regularly on campus for college functions and annual concerts. Membership is by audition.
The Trumpet Ensemble at Emory & Henry College is made up of select trumpet players that represent the college through outreach performances, concerts and ceremonial functions on campus. The ensemble is a two time semifinalist at the national trumpet competition and has been selected twice as a featured collegiate trumpet ensemble at the international trumpet guild conference. This group has toured throughout Austria and Germany and membership is by audition.
The Brass Ensemble performs throughout the year in concert and ceremonial functions for the college. Membership is open to all brass players on campus. This group travels frequently to represent the college both regionally, nationally and internationally. Recently the brass ensemble traveled to and performed throughout China.
This ensemble is made up of select musicians that perform on woodwind instruments. It offers the unique opportunity for woodwind only chamber music to be performed. The group performs regular as part of the college’s concert series. Membership is open to all woodwind instrumentalists.
The jazz ensemble is open to students from other concentrations within Emory & Henry College who demonstrate exceptional instrumental skills in their auditions.
Guitar Ensemble is a great way for Guitar Players to get more exposure to reading music and performing with other guitarists. Students should generally have some private lesson experience before joining the guitar ensemble. Basic note reading will be required. Guitar Ensemble will include training to improve play as well as working on performance pieces. One concert is presented each semester. For more information, contact instructor David Smith at
Any student taking private lessons in guitar, brass, strings, percussion, or woodwinds is eligible, at the discretion of the instructor, to participate in monthly Music Hour Performances.
