Evaluating Your GPA
Your GPA is the average of your grades in all courses taken for credit, on a scale of A, B, C, D, or F or + and -. Courses in which you earn a P (passing grade) count for college credit, but do not affect your GPA. Transfer courses taken at other colleges do not affect your GPA either. If you repeat a course, only the higher grade is used in computing the GPA.
To graduate from Emory & Henry, you must achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, as well as a 2.0 in your major and in your minor. Students whose GPAs reflect high academic achievement may be conferred academic honors based upon the following scale:
- A student with at least a 3.3 GPA will graduate cum laude.
- A student with at least a 3.6 GPA will graduate magna cum laude.
- A student with at least a 3.9 GPA will graduate summa cum laude.
Grade values for honors are calculated to the third decimal place and are not rounded up. Grades accepted for transfer of credit to Emory & Henry are not included in the computation of cumulative grade point average.
Academic achievements are also recognized each semester. Students who complete a minimum of twelve credit hours in a semester and whose semester averages are 3.6 or above are placed on the Dean's List.
The first-year student with the highest overall average at the end of the first year of study is named for the Sigma Mu Freshman Award. Those students ranked at the top of their sophomore, junior, and senior classes receive the Snavely Prize for their respective class. The winner of the Senior Snavely Prize receives a Revere bowl. A number of other academic awards are presented to junior and senior students by individual departments.
Academic performance must meet minimum requirements for the student to continue to attend the College. Minimum grade point averages required of students at various stages are as follows:
- Students who have earned fewer than 26 hours of credit must have a GPA of at least 1.80.
- Students who have earned at least 26 hours but fewer than 57 must have a GPA of at least 1.90.
- Students who have earned 57 hours of credit or more must have a GPA of at least 2.00.
