Instructions for Downloading eBooks
- Directions for downloading EBSCO e-books differ among the various devices.
- To access the college's wireless network, you must have your tablet device whitelisted through the IT Helpdesk.
- EBSCO eBooks will be "checked out" to your device for the length of time that you select. Deleting an eBook from your device will not check the book back in for use by others, so be considerate when choosing your checkout time.
- Due to licensing agreements, some eBooks may not be available for download.
Owners of iPads and iPhones use the following steps:
- Create an Adobe Online ID at Adobe.com.
- Download the Bluefire Reader app to your iPad/iPhone.
- Open the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad/iPhone and authorize it by entering the Adobe Online ID you created in step 1 (you should be prompted to authorize automatically once you open the Bluefire app).
- From your device, find an eBook in the EBSCO eBooks Collection (through the library database page) or the library catalog that you want to download.
- Click on the "Download This eBook (Offline)" link.
- You will be asked to sign in to your EBSCOhost account. (If you don't have an account you can create one here). Then select how many hours, 1-168, you want to check out the book and click on the "Checkout & Download" button.
- A new screen will pop up with the Bluefire Reader logo. Click on the 'Open in "Bluefire" button'. This will automatically begin downloading the eBook into the Bluefire Reader app. This may take a few minutes.
Nook users follow these steps:
- Download Adobe Digital Editions to your computer (at http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions), and authorize with your Adobe ID (if you do not have an Adobe ID you can create one at this point).
- When looking at an e-book in EBSCO, click on the "Download This eBook (Offline)" link
- You will be asked to sign in to your EBSCOhost account. (If you don't have an account you can create one here). Then select how many hours, 1-168, you want to check out the book and click on the "Checkout & Download" button.
- You should then be prompted to save the book. When the download is complete click "Open". The book should open in Adobe Digital Editions.
- Connect your Nook to the computer through its USB cable. You should see the Nook appear in Adobe Digital Editions (on the left side, in the listing of bookshelves, underneath all items/borrowed/purchased/recently read).
- In Adobe Digital Editions, go to the Library View. With your mouse, drag the book to the Nook. It will be copied onto your Nook immediately. Eject the Nook from your computer.
- On your Nook, go to Library, My Files, and Digital Editions, and tap the file you just downloaded.
Android devices require the following:
- Download Adobe Digital Editions to your computer (at http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions), and authorize with your Adobe ID (if you do not have an Adobe ID you can create one at this point).
- When looking at an e-book in EBSCO, click on the "Download This eBook (Offline)" link
- You will be asked to sign in to your EBSCOhost account. (If you
don't have an account you can create one here). Then select how many
hours, 1-168, you want to check out the book and click on the "Checkout & Download" button.
- You should then be prompted to save the book to Adobe Digital Editions. Click "Open".
- Download the Bluefire Reader app to your Android device.
- Connect your portable device to your computer.
- On your android device open the Bluefire Reader app. Just as the Adobe Digital Editions software must be authorized with your Adobe ID, the portable device must also be authorized to be able to transfer protected content to and from the device. Authorize the device on the Info page of the Bluefire app.
- On your computer, open the My Digital Editions folder which is located under My Documents.
- In another window on your computer open the tablet. Open the Bluefire folder.
- On your computer, transfer items to the device by clicking on the book title in the My Digital Editions folder, then dragging and dropping the title into the Imports folder within the Bluefire folder.
- On the tablet, in the Bluefire app, go to the Info page, and click on import. The message "Adding books to your library" should display.
- Open your eBook in Bluefire Reader on the Library page to begin reading.
Kindle Fire users follow these steps:
- Create an Adobe Online ID at Adobe.com.
- To download the Bluefire Reader app to your Kindle Fire, first tap “Settings” on your Kindle Fire (it’s the icon that looks like a gear)
- Tap “More”
- Scroll down until you see “Device”
- In the Device tab, set “Allow installation of Applications” to ON, and tap OK when you see the Warning prompt
- Tap here (or go to http://www.bluefirereader.com/files/BluefireReader.apk) to download the Bluefire Reader APK (the Android app)
- Tap the Menu icon at the bottom of the screen and tap Downloads
- Tap on the file named “BluefireReader.apk”
- The Fire will ask if you are sure you want to install the app…
- Tap “Yes”
- After the installation is complete, look for Bluefire Reader in your Apps collection. Open the Bluefire Reader app on your Kindle Fire and authorize it by entering the Adobe Online ID you created in step 1 (if you are not automatically prompted to do so, tap "Info" and "Authorize").
- From your device, find an eBook in the EBSCO eBooks Collection (through the library database page) or the library catalog that you want to download.
- Click on the "Download This eBook (Offline)" link. You will be asked how many hours, 1-168, you want to check the book out. Then click on "Checkout & Download" button.
- You will be asked to sign in to your EBSCOhost account. (If you don't have an account you can create one here). Then select how many hours, 1-168, you want to check out the book.
- The book will automatically begin downloading into the Bluefire Reader app. This may take a few minutes.
