Financial Aid for Spring Semester Applicants

How and when am I notified of my Emory & Henry Financial Aid Award?
The Emory & Henry Office of Financial Aid prepares an award letter for each student, outlining his or her financial aid package, including outright grants and scholarships along with a self-help portion.

By including a self-help component, Emory & Henry asks that students become partners in the process of financing their education by accepting a work study job on campus and/or one or more low-interest loans.

Emory & Henry begins sending financial aid award letters to first-year students in January each year.

How is my financial need determined?
The U.S. Department of Education uses a formula from your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). All schools you list on the FAFSA will be sent your EFC. The EFC is the amount of money the Department of Education determines you can afford to pay for your student to go to college for one year.

Once the college has your EFC, then we can determine your need. Need is determined by taking the cost of attendance and subtracting it from your EFC.

How do I apply for financial aid at Emory & Henry?
STEP 1: Apply for Admission

You must first be accepted for admission to the College before you can be considered for financial aid.

STEP 2: Obtain and submit FAFSA

By mid-December:

Obtain a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from your high school guidance counselor or college financial aid office.

As soon as possible after January 1:

Submit the completed FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, to the Emory & Henry Financial Aid Office, or to the agency indicated on the form. Indicate that you want results sent to Emory & Henry College, code 003709.

NOTE: Before submitting your application, please double-check all names, social security numbers, and make sure you sign the application. Also, if you choose to submit a paper copy of the FAFSA, mail it directly to our financial aid office instead of the address provided on the application. This will allow us to process your application much faster.

STEP 3: Apply for loans

Along with your award letter, you will be sent instructions on completing both student and parent loans. Once you have completed the loan process, the College will be notified electronically of your loan application.

STEP 4: Submit Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) application

By July 31:

The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) is a state funded grant available to all Virginia residents attending a private college in Virginia. This grant is guaranteed but does require an application. We will mail this form to Virginia residents after they have been accepted for admission. Deadline for this application is July 31. Click here to download a copy of the VTAG application.

STEP 5: Verification

Verification is a review process comparing information from your FAFSA, with signed copies of your or your parent's federal tax forms for the correct year, W-2s, or other financial documents. One in three applications will be selected by the Department of Education. If you are selected for verification, you will be notified to provide us with a completed verification worksheet, signed copies of the appropriate federal tax return, W-2s. There may be other documentation required and this must be submitted before need based aid from any source can be released to a student’s account. All documents need to be returned to the Centralized Student Assistance Office. Click here for a printable copy of the Verification Worksheet, being sure to select the correct academic year and dependency status.

What is Emory & Henry's school code?
003709

What can I do if the FAFSA does not reflect my current financial situation?
Contact our office if the FAFSA does not reflect your current financial situation or if your financial situation changes during the academic year. Additional documentation may be required from you, and then we can review your FAFSA and see if we can make any adjustments to it which may allow for additional funding.

Do my parents or I have to complete my federal tax returns before filing the FAFSA?
The FAFSA allows for estimates for income and tax information if you have not yet completed your federal tax returns. Please keep in mind that once you do file your taxes that you must correct the FAFSA because you are required to report your most accurate financial situation.

Financial Aid for Spring Semester Applicatns
FAFSA:
Applicants for the Spring Semester should file the FAFSA for the current academic year. If the student has already filed, the student should make the FAFSA information available to Emory & Henry by adding our FAFSA code (003709).

VTAG (For Virginia Residents):
Although VTAG is not always authorized for applicants starting in the spring semester, Spring applicants should still file the VTAG application by December 1 to receive VTAG if approved by the state.
