Professional Judgment
The U. S. Department of Education gives our office some latitude in considering special circumstances not reflected on the FAFSA. Circumstances that might call for a professional judgment on our part include, but are not limited to:
- Loss or reduction of income,
- Excessive medical expenses actually paid but not reimbursed by insurance,
- Change in family dynamics not shown on tax return, and
- Catastrophic loss such as fire, storm, etc.
If you have a circumstance not addressed by the FAFSA, please share the details in writing (email is acceptable) with this office. We will evaluate the situation in order to determine if a professional judgment is possible and advise you of any required documentation. Please remember:
- Other schools are not required to accept our judgment nor are we required to accept another institution's judgment;
- Respond promptly to any requests for additional information;
- Put the student's name on any additional documentation; and
- Reapply each year for a continuing situation as updated information is required.
