Federal Grants

All federal grants are subject to Title IV regulations and are subject to change based on legislative action by the U. S. Congress and regulations from the U. S. Department of Education.

Pell Grant
For 2009-2010, the federal Pell Grant ranges from $900 to $5,350 depending on your EFC range. For 2010-2011, the range will be $1,176 to $5,550, depending on the EFC.  This grant is subject to all Title IV regulations regarding proration based on level of enrollment, outcomes of verification, if required, and used only for educational purposes. Repayment of this grant to the U. S. Department of Education may be required if an overpayment or over-award occurs based on the receipt of other assistance or loans or withdrawal from Emory & Henry College.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
The SEOG is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need - that is, students with the lowest EFC - with priority to Pell grant recipients. Funding is limited so there is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG. You may be able to receive from $400 to $2000 a year, depending on when you apply, your level of need, and available funding from the federal government to Emory & Henry College. You must be enrolled full-time to receive this grant.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
The Academic Competitiveness Grant is a grant limited to Pell recipients who have recently completed a rigorous high school program as defined by the Secretary of the U. S. Department of Education. You can self-select on the FAFSA if you believe you are eligible. Eligibility will be confirmed based on review of the official high school transcript which must be sent following graduation. Freshmen are eligible to receive $750 for their first academic year. Students who achieve sophomore standing, have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average, and continue to be Pell recipients are eligible for $1300 for the second year of attendance. You are only eligible for one year of ACG at each level and must be enrolled full-time to receive this grant.

NOTE:  Under current legislation, funding for this grant will cease after 2010-2011 unless Congress acts to fund again.

Federal grant to dependent children of military members killed in action in Iraq or Afghanistan
Iraq/Afghanistan Grant or full Pell Grant (if otherwise eligible for Pell) will be available for those dependents of our members of the military branches killed in action in either Iraq or Afghanistan.  The Iraq/Afghanistan Grant will be the equivalent of a full Pell Grant for those students not otherwise eligible for Pell.  If a student is Pell eligible, regardless of level, the Pell Grant will be increased to full level.
Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant
The SMART grant is awarded to 3rd and 4th year students, based on hours achieved, and requires that a student major in a specific field, namely Computer Science, Engineering, high-need Foreign Language, Life Science, Math, Physical Science or Technology. Students receiving a Pell Grant are eligible to receive $4,000 a year grant if they have declared a major in an eligible field, have a cumulative 3.0 GPA each term, and are enrolled each term in a required course for their major. Contact the CSA Office to confirm your eligibility.

NOTE:  Under current legislation, funding for this grant will cease after 2010-2011 unless Congress acts to fund again.

TEACH Grant
Caution! This grant may be converted by the U. S. Department of Education to an unsubsidized Stafford loan with interest accruing to you from the date of receipt of any grant funds if you fail to fulfill ALL requirements for this grant within the time period allowed. Pease read all documents associated with this grant with care to be certain you wish to assume the associated responsibilities. You may learn more about the grant on the U. S. Department of Education website at www.teachgrant.ed.gov.

In order to encourage students to enter the teaching profession within certain specific shortage areas, the federal government created the TEACH Grant. You may read more about the teacher shortage areas by state and the currently approved low-income schools at www.teachgrant.ed.gov. You must teach full time a total four years out of the first eight years you are teaching in a high need field as defined by the U. S. Department of Education in a school with a majority of low income families in order for your grant to remain a grant and not convert into a loan. The eligible fields and schools are based on the lists when you enter your teaching profession, NOT when you enroll in college. You must complete the full four years required or the entire grant funding received converts to a loan at 6.8 percent interest. There is no proration for teaching less than four years.

Emory & Henry College has been approved by the U. S. Department of Education to participate in the TEACH Grant program. After careful consideration all of the details of this program, if you desire to participate in the TEACH Grant program, you should notify the CSA Office. Once we establish institutional eligibility, we will award you the TEACH Grant at up to $4000 per year based on full-time enrollment. Part time enrollment will be eligible to receive a prorated award. There is a lifetime limit of $16,000. Once your eligibility is confirmed, our office will provide the necessary information to the U. S. Department of Education and will notify you when your Agreement to Serve is ready for you to complete. You must complete the Agreement to Serve with the federal government (www.teach-ats.ed.gov) with your PIN confirming that you promise to repay this grant as a loan with 6.8% interest accruing from the date funds were received by you if you fail to complete all requirements.

In addition to the federal requirements, to be eligible for a TEACH Grant you must:

  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programs and plan to enter the teaching profession:

    • Any graduate level program, including 5-year M.Ed. program

    • Post baccalaureate coursework leading to teacher licensure

    • Undergraduate program only if you have declared an education minor and completed at least one fundamental education course with a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Must complete annual Counseling and Agreement to Serve form with the U. S. Department of Education confirming your understanding of the responsibilities associated with this grant program, including required payback if you fail to meet your responsibilities. For initial and subsequent award years, you will be notified by our office when your information has been uploaded to the Department’s site. At that time, you must complete this online document using your FAFSA PIN before funds may be disbursed to your student account.

  • All student must complete exit counseling regarding their TEACH Grant when leaving enrollment at Emory & Henry College.
