FAFSA Verification
The U.S. Department of Education selects one in three FAFSAs for verification. Being selected for verification does not mean you have done anything wrong. You just have an additional step to complete before your financial aid becomes official. Filing early with accurate information may reduce your chances of being selected
If you are selected for verification, Emory & Henry College is required by federal regulations to collect certain financial documents to ensure the accuracy of your FAFSA. You are required to complete and sign a verification worksheet for the appropriate year. You must attach a signed copy of your federal tax return; i.e., 1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ, or Telefile, as well as copies of W2s. The actual line by line tax return or official transcript is required, not just an accountant's summary sheet or electronic signature page. If you were not required to file a federal return, you simply indicate that on the verification worksheet. If you are a dependent student, a signed copy of your parents' federal tax return is also required. Although you should always keep a personal copy of your filed federal tax return, if you cannot find your copy or did not keep one, contact the Internal Revenue Service online or by phone (1.800.829.1040) and request an official tax transcript be sent to you.
If you were required to include parental information on your FAFSA, you must use the dependent verification worksheet. Otherwise, you may use the independent verification worksheet. Worksheets can be found here. Please use the correct award year and appropriate dependency status form.
Caution! Federal Title IV, college need-based financial aid, or student loans cannot be released to your account until the verification process is complete. Although you may have an extension to file with the IRS, the Department of Education will not allow the school to release funds without verification being completed unless the school wishes to stand liable for any change in eligibility.
Emory & Henry College will not assume that liability, please plan accordingly.
Verification may also change the results of your FAFSA and could impact your financial aid award. Completing the process early can assure you of the best available financial aid. May 15 is the deadline for completing verification in a timely manner to finalize the financial aid process. If you have an extension on filing your taxes and verification has not been completed by August 1, you must make other payment arrangements such as a parent PLUS loan, private student loan, or eight-month payment plan for the fall term, pending completion of the verification process.
