Emory & Henry Football Team Gives Back to the Community
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Members of the Emory & Henry football team joined recently in college-wide efforts recently to build a “house of hope” for a needy family in Abingdon, Va.
The athletes’ efforts were part of a “blitz build” project, which was begun March 26 and is expected to be completed on April 17. The effort is a partnership involving Emory & Henry, the Abingdon chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and the Meadowview and Emory United Methodist churches.
First-year student Travis Bolt and sophomore Spencer Yount were among 20 football players who contributed to the project Saturday, April 4. “It’s a great feeling to go out of your way and help someone, it didn’t even feel like work,” Bolt said. “I enjoyed seeing so many people come together for one cause,” said Yount.
The student athletes worked in a wide variety of capacities, but they spent most of their time wood framing and preparing and laying cement.
The athletes took great pride in the fact that they took the initiative to get involved in the effort. Their head coach, Don Montgomery, although a participant in the building effort, did not require them to get involved.
And, the athletes said, they enjoyed working alongside E&H faculty, staff and students as they made a difference for a local family.
