Several Women Honored at Annual E&H Athletic Banquet

Emory & Henry College honored numerous female athletes from six sports during its annual Women’s Athletic Banquet on Tuesday, April 28.

Awards in basketball were given to Alex Lyons of Bristol, Tenn., Best Offensive Player; Tuesdee Woods of Fort Blackmore, Va., Best Defensive Player; Brittany Rogers of Gate City, Va., Free Throw Award and Ashton Kaylor of Bristol, Tenn., Most Improved Player Award.

Awards in soccer went to Loren Favale of Chester, Va., Rookie of the Year; Cameron Moss of Abingdon, Va., Most Improved Player; Colleen Johnson of Alexandria, Va. and Emily Kirby of Marion, Va., Coach’s Award and Hayley Poland Mechanicsville, Va., Most Valuable Player.

Softball awards went to Dana Dettmar of Ewing, N.J., Wasps Award and Best Offense; Jaime Roy of Troutville, Va., Best Defense and Nicole Holdaway of Blacksburg, Va., Most Improved.

Swimming honors went to Caroline Haynes of Warrensburg, Mo., Most Improved; Caitie Neal of Harrisonburg, Va., Team Spirit and Coach’s Award.

Awards in tennis went to Jill and Jess Williams of Bristol, Va., Most Valuable Players; Jessie Jacobs of West Palm Beach, Fla., Most Improved and Kandyce Baker of Schuyler, Va., Coach’s Award.

Women’s volleyball awards include Twyla Sessor of Troutdale, Va., Best Defensive Player; Rachel Fertitta of Roanoke, Va., Best Offensive Player and Nikki Rogich of Cedar Bluff, Va., Wasp Award.
The Top Runner Award in cross country was given to Karen Archibald of Great Falls, Va.

Academic awards were given to the players with the highest GPA’s on the team. Emma Sturgill of Marion, Va., Women’s Athletics 2008-2009 Scholar Athlete and Women’s Soccer Scholar Athlete Awards; Ashlee Hagee of Wytheville, Va., Cross Country Scholar Athlete Award; Lauren Whitmer of Ferrum, Va., Volleyball Scholar Athlete Award; Ashlyn Baird of Boone, N.C., Women’s Basketball Scholar Athlete Award; Virginia Lamb of Huntsville, Ala., Swimming Scholar Athlete Award; Haley McCool of Columbus, N.C., Softball Scholar Athlete Award and Jena Lytle of Forest, Va., Women’s Tennis Scholar Athlete Award.

Longtime E&H men’s basketball coach and current athletic director Bob Johnson was awarded the Fanelli Award and Joy Scruggs was recognized for her 28 seasons with the women’s basketball team.
