Ms. Lappé is a democracy advocate and world food and hunger expert. The first of her 16 books, Diet for a Small Planet, has sold three million copies and is considered “the blueprint for eating with a small carbon footprint since long before the term was coined” [J.M. Hirsch, Associated Press]. She has received 17 honorary doctorates and was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000-2001. Recently, she received the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award and Gourmet Magazine listed her among the 25 people (along with Thomas Jefferson and Julia Child) whose work has changed the way America eats.
