Junior Keith Fenner links a recent summer experience to an emphasis on leadership as he engages in baseball at Emory & Henry.

During this past summer, Keith, who plays for the Wasps as a pitcher and short stop, worked with Mark Dewey, a former major league pitcher for teams including the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dewey helped Keith with his game, focusing on mechanics and conditioning while emphasizing leadership and mental toughness.

"He helped me gain velocity as well as a smarter baseball mind as far as how to pitch to batters," said Keith, who was recently named the E&H Student Athlete of the Month for April.

A Chilhowie resident and a graduate of Chilhowie High School, Keith has been involved with baseball ever since he started playing t-ball when he was 5 years old.

Keith’s father and previous coaches have been his greatest inspirations. "My dad played college basketball, and he always pushed me to be the best athlete I could be. My high school coaches were also big on me playing college baseball, so they helped me get recruited and succeed on and off the field," he said.

E&H Head Baseball Coach Trey McCall continues to inspire Keith, since he was one of the top reasons why Keith decided to come to the College.

Leadership and motivation are important to Keith’s approach to baseball. "I want my teammates to know that I give it all I've got and want to win each time I step on the field," he said.

When he is not on the baseball field or in the classroom working on his business education degree, Keith enjoys hunting and fishing. He also enjoys snow skiing and water skiing.
