Four Emory & Henry College alumni formed the winning team in a benefit golf tournament, which was sponsored by the College and held Monday at the Glenrochie Golf Course in Abingdon.

Major Warner and Leon Hill of the Class of 1991 and DeWayne Moore and Luke Sampson of the Class of 1993 were members of the E&H basketball team under legendary coach Bob Johnson. During the six years that these men were a part of the E&H basketrball team (1987 to 1993), Emory & Henry reached the NCAA playoffs five times.

The alumni teamed up on the golf course to shoot an impressive 52 and to claim the top prize in the Third Annual I-HEY (I Help Every Year) Golf Tournament. Their team scored just ahead of E&H friends Joe Lyle, Doug Ellis, Carson Jackson and Richard Quillen, who shot a combined score of 54.

"The golf event allows me to provide support for E&H athletics and to thank the many other college supporters," Hill said, "not only for what they did during the time I was there, but in all the years since I have been away.  Emory & Henry is a special place, surrounded by special people."

Twenty-eight teams participated in the tournament, the proceeds of which benefit the E&H athletic program. Mod-U-Kraf of Rocky Mount, Va. served as the corporate sponsor of the event.

The first-place team took home $400 while the second place team split $200. Participants were served a barbecue dinner following the event and many were awarded raffle prizes and proceeds of a 50/50 drawing.

The tournament offered major prizes for a hole-in-one on each of the four par-3 holes on the course.  The prizes included $10,000, two airline tickets, a premium golf equipment package, and a premium electronics equipment package.

President Rosalind Reichard and Director of Athletics Myra Sims were on hand to welcome the golfers.  Sims said, "I am so appreciative of the huge turnout in support of Emory & Henry Athletics. It was a beautiful day and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet so many of our loyal alumni and friends. It is my hope to continue to make the tournament even stronger going forward by adding more substantial sponsorship arrangements and making more prizes available to participants."
