Volunteers and Residents of the Wakefield community came together with Self-Help Virginia to create clean, running water to 38 homes along Birch Island Road. The project's uniqueness stems from the volunteer labor that contributes time and energy to significantly reduce the cost instead of having the traditional county employees complete the water project. Judy Harrington, project manager with the Sussex Service Authority, explained that the project is essential to residents of that area because of recurring problems with the septic tanks and poor drainage. Many of the homes have shallow wells, which are also prone to drying up, especially during hot summer months.
