Most of the residents in the Pea Patch Area, Buchanan County have had little to no water because of the active mining around them. The mining has caused cracks in the locals wells causing the water to leak as the miners beat the walls of the mine. Gay Hale, a resident of the Pea Patch area, has went over 50 years without convenient water because her well went dry due to mining near her house.

The board of supervisors gave the green light to start a self-help water project in the Peapatch community. The project has plans to serve 42 households and one church over a nine mile span.
