Photo Gallery: E&H 175th Anniversary Celebration Events
On Thursday, October 13 the keynote address for the 175th anniversary celebration will be presented by world-renowned historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at 7:30 p.m. in the King Center. Goodwin’s latest book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, details the presidential cabinet debates during the Civil War, which occurred just 25 years after the founding of Emory & Henry College. Producer Steven Spielberg is developing a film, due out in 2012, based on Goodwin’s book.
With the celebration in high gear, we should take a moment to look back over the past month or so at some of the exciting events that have already taken place and the future celebrations we can look forward to. Click here to see pictures from many of the events listed below.
In mid-September, Emory & Henry sponsored a stage at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion — the CJ & Company Stage on Sixth Street — as well as numerous bands featuring E&H alumni musicians, and threw a party for alumni and friends.
Emory & Henry College celebrated the laying of the cornerstone of its original administration building on Friday, Sept. 30, exactly 175 years after the cornerstone was laid. The occasion was marked with celebratory remarks and a return of the bell that once hung in the bell tower atop Wiley Hall. A fireworks display was presented at the conclusion of the day’s events.
The appearance of the Chinese Opera Orchestra of Shanghai later that evening was a major event of Emory & Henry’s Arts Series 2011-2012, as well as the 175th Anniversary of the College. The orchestra is heralded for preserving and popularizing Chinese traditional music and in making it accessible to people of all ages in the region, the nation and the world.
Running concurrent to all of the September 30th events was the college’s annual Literary Festival featuring Barbara Kingsolver, best-selling author and resident of Meadowview, Va. Her most recent novel, The Lacuna, received Great Britain’s prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction.
