E&H Celebrates Scholarship Partnership with Alpha Natural Resources

E&H Partners with Alpha Natural Resources for Scholarship

Emory & Henry College celebrated Monday the establishment of scholarship by Alpha Natural Resources for students majoring in business –related fields and mass communications.

The Alpha Natural Resources Scholarship and Student Travel Partnership will provide annual scholarships to needy and worthy students majoring in business administration (including management, accounting and international business), economics and mass communications.

The partnership agreement was signed in a ceremony at Emory & Henry. On hand for the signing were the following representatives from Alpha Natural Resources: Vaughn Groves, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary; Ted Pile, vice president for corporate communications; and Judy Kibler, manager, recruiting.

Alpha Natural Resources is a local company that has become one of the top three coal producing companies in the country and the world’s leading exporter of metallurgic coal. The company believes strongly in supporting local communities and partnering with others who share that mission, Groves said.

“It’s part of what we call ‘Living Right’,” said Groves. It’s giving back to the people and individuals where we live and work in. Part of that is recognizing Emory & Henry on their stature and what they have to give back to the community and we just want to be a part of that.”

In thanking Alpha Natural Resources for the gift, E&H President Reichard praised the company for its commitment to the region and higher education. “We are blessed to have in our midst a company that recognizes that is through the enhancement of higher education in this region that we provide the best leaders, those who are committed to this place and to the prosperity of our businesses, industries and communities.”

Under the agreement, Alpha Natural Resources will provide $25,000 each year for five years toward the partnership. The money supports an annual scholarships as well as travel to national competitions.
