Emory & Henry College is the best college or university in the portion of Virginia extending west from Roanoke to the Tennessee border, according to a poll by Virginia Living Magazine.
The College, which currently is celebrating its 175th anniversary, was also voted best historic site in the region, and it’s football team was named second best sports team.
More than 10,000 readers responded to the poll conducted in February by the magazine, which features stories about life and culture from around the state. The results of the poll were published in May as part of a special edition of Virginia Living Magazine.
In the category of Best College or University, Emory & Henry placed first followed by Virginia Tech and Radford University. This first-ever poll by Virginia Living Magazine includes the top three placements in a wide range of categories.
“Emory & Henry enjoys passionate support from its students and alumni from across the state, so we are not surprised to find that support reflected in this poll by this popular magazine,” said Dirk Moore, director of E&H public relations. "In addition, people throughout Virginia recognize Emory & Henry as an institution with a record of excellence and a devotion to serving others."
Emory & Henry also placed first in the category of Best Historic Site ahead of the Martha Washington Hotel in Abingdon. The Emory & Henry football team placed second in the category of Best Local Sports Team, behind the Virginia Tech football team.
The poll results are the latest in a long list of recent recognitions for the College, which is placed among the top tier of national liberal arts institutions by U.S. News and World Report and is among the top 50 national liberal arts colleges, according to Washington Monthly.
