Located in the Highlands of Virginia, Emory & Henry has devoted itself since 1836 to the belief that education can have a transformative effect on an individual, a place and ultimately the wider world. Emory & Henry College is named for Bishop John Emory, an eminent Methodist church leader, and Patrick Henry, a patriot of the American Revolution and Virginia’s first governor. Together they symbolize the college’s dual emphasis on spiritual growth and civic engagement.
In addition to its continued inclusion within Loren Pope’s publication, Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About Colleges, E&H has received accolades over the last year from such widely-known publications as Newsweek and Washington Monthly. Both publications praised the College’s work and continued devotion towards serving learning.
E&H was also honored over the past year with the distinguished President’s Award for Community Service, the highest national recognition given to a college or university for service learning. Emory & Henry was selected from approximately 800 institutions competing for the award and became the first Virginia school to win the award since it was begun three years ago by President George W. Bush.
