A custodian for Emory & Henry College was recently honored by her fellow employees as the September recipient of the Blue & Gold Staff Award.
The recipient, Belle Hockett, has served the College for 27-years as a member of the Facilities staff.
The Blue & Gold Staff Award was created to recognize outstanding Emory & Henry employees who go above and beyond the call of duty -- not only in their respective positions, but in the College community as well.
Hockett works in the King Center, with her primary responsibilities resting on the cleaning and upkeep of team uniforms for all-sports. The thing she enjoys most about her job is the interaction with students.
During her nearly three decades of service to the college Hockett has worked in every dorm on campus, but her current assignment with the Athletics Department is close to her heart. Hockett and her late husband, Leo, are longtime fans of the Wasps and have attended countless home and road games over the years. Her favorite sports include football and volleyball.
“I’ve been coming to games for almost 50-years,” Hockett said.
Leo Hockett was awarded the Dave Thomas 12th-Man award for his support of Emory & Henry athletics, and after his passing Belle created the Leo Hockett Scholarship to support students who needed additional financial aid to attend Emory & Henry.
Hockett has three children, Eloise, Leo Jr. and her youngest child Nancy.
When asked about the importance of the Blue & Gold Staff Award, President Reichard said, “It’s so important to me that we support all of our employees. The quality of the learning environment here at the College is very dependent on the work of the staff. They influence our students in a multitude of ways, and it’s so important that we provide support to them.”
If you know an Emory & Henry staff member who has performed exceptionally in his or her role and would like to nominate that employee for the Blue & Gold Staff Award, contact the Human Resources Office by the last business day of each month.
