Emory & Henry College Piano Professor Lisa Withers to Present Recital

Mar 18th, 2014   7:30 pm 9:00 pm
@ Memorial Chapel Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va.

Dr. Lisa Withers, pianist and chair of the E&H Music Department, will present a collection of some of her personal favorites during a recital Tuesday, March 18.  The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel on the E&H campus.

Withers, who has delighted audiences across the nation with a wide repertoire of piano music, will include in this recital Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A Major, D. 959 and Maurice Ravel’s Sonatina, along with several tangos by Astor Piazzolla.

Since joining the faculty at Emory & Henry in 2002, this highly accomplished pianist has performed solo and collaborative recitals and master classes throughout the Southeastern and Midwestern United States.  She was a 2010 recipient of the Jean F. Ritchie Fellowship in the Fine and Performing Arts from the Appalachian College Association.

She holds a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance from West Virginia University and a Master of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Michigan.  She has been honored in several competitions and has performed in master classes with major performing artists and composers, and in music festivals including the French Piano Institute in Paris.

Her performance and research interests include the piano music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, chamber music written by contemporary composers, and the use of Appalachian musical idioms in contemporary “classical” piano music.

Withers has been teaching piano and performing professionally for more than 20 years.  Her piano students have ranged in age from four to 85, spanning repertoire that includes “Hot Cross Buns”and Chopin’s “Ballade in F Minor.”

At Emory & Henry she teaches piano, music theory, music history, and courses in the core curriculum.  She has served in various administrative roles at the college, including chair of the music department and chair of the division of visual and performing arts.  From 2009-2011, she served as the president of the Virginia Music Teachers Association and she currently serves as treasurer for the Blue Ridge Music Teachers Association.

Withers fills her time away from E&H with writing and mailing letters (written on stationery) and with following modernized, trans-media adaptations of her favorite nineteenth century British novels. She also performs dramatic renditions of bedtime stories for her children, Lucy and Carter.

This recital is free and open to the public.  Contact the office of Anita Coulthard for additional information.  276-944-6846 or Zo?'G0gd2RK{nEFv]#[8dyr9w\MM40_w%%l.
