The Emory & Henry College Department of Theatre will offer four public performances of playwright David Auburn's award-winning play, "Proof," Feb. 20-23.

This 2000 drama is a riveting tale that helps explore the worlds of mathematics and mental illness through the grief of the daughter of a brilliant, and recently deceased, mathematician.

Each performance is in the Studio Theatre on the E&H campus. Performances on Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 20-22, begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday, Feb. 23 performance begins at 3 p.m.

In the play, the character, Catherine, cares for her brilliant, but ailing mathematician father, Robert, until his death. The effects of his debilitating mental illness are depicted through flashbacks to Catherine's young life and her vivid imagination. All is complicated by her ensuing relationship with her father's last Ph. D. student, Hal, and the arrival of her own estranged sister, Claire.

Directed by Daniel J. Sullivan, the initial production was staged off-Broadway, but was quickly transferred to the Broadway theatre. Mary-Louise Parker's depiction of Catherine won her a Tony award, and the play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The Emory & Henry College production is directed by Dr. Kelly J.G. Bremner, faculty member in the theatre department with stage and production design by Daniel L. Wheeler, chair of the E&H Theatre Department.
