Learning. Doing. Connecting. Ampersand at Emory & Henry CollegeA New Space

A newly renovated space on the Emory & Henry College campus will open Fall 2016 to support the institution’s emphasis on integrative learning. Located at the heart of campus near the dining hall and “the duck pond,” the Ampersand Center houses key staff who assist students as they connect what they care about to what they are learning so that they are able to work on projects that contribute to the common good.

“Our college excels in making critical connections and getting students working on projects from the first day they step on campus,” says Dr. Tracy Lauder, who is directing the opening of the Ampersand Center. “We want students to go into job interviews excited to tell future employers about the projects they worked on at E&H—and how that work connects across disciplines, co-curricular activities, personal experiences, and the broader world. The Ampersand Center will help students make those connections.”

Within the bright and casual atmosphere of the new Ampersand Center—featuring reclaimed barn-wood floors, factory window walls, and open ceilings—students will find comfortable spaces to meet with welcoming staff. Students may drop in or make appointments; the staff will guide students toward answers and direct them to essential resources on and off campus.

At the Ampersand Center, students can explore potential majors and careers, as well as find ways to get involved in “hands-on” work such as internships, employment, and other real-world experiences. Additionally, the Center helps students seeking involvement in undergraduate research and artistic expression work, project planning, civic engagement activities, and co-curricular opportunities, as well as student funding for projects and project-related travel.

The Ampersand Center also develops programming to support faculty and staff in their work as mentors, teachers, project developers, and integrative learners.
