Thompson is a widely published poet, essayist, and literary critic. His research interests include the American west, play, literacy, and educational policy.
Book--The Edges of the West: A Literature of Hope for the Future; text documentation during reading or marginalia as it affects reading comprehension; Continued production of flash fiction, poetry, pedagogical essays, and opinion pieces.
Have published articles with both undergraduate and graduate students regarding adolescent literature, writing, and reading comprehension.
Continued archival research in Texas, New Hampshire, and points in the American West in search of historical examples of non-professional writers waxing poetic in such a way that students can turn use of their writings as the basis for dramatic productions in their classrooms, their schools and their communities.
