Research: Dr. Hainsworth’s research involves the application of analytical chemistry techniques to environmental problems. Projects include a collaboration with the American Chestnut Foundation in an effort to develop a rapid assay for determining resistance to the chestnut blight. Other research interests involve the study of long-lived radionuclides including 14C as environmental tracers, the extent and persistence of mercury contamination in the South Fork Holston River, and general water quality issues in southwestern Virginia.
Student Research: Examples of undergraduate research projects include the monitoring of mercury in samples from the North Fork Holston River and the development of rapid assay techniques for determining chestnut blight resistance in Castanea dentata (American Chestnut).
Upcoming Research: My research will continue to focus on blight resistance in the American chestnut, and water quality issues in Southwest Virginia. Cafeteria
