M.A.Ed. cohorts for teachers in K-12

     
The M.A. in Education cohort programs lead to a Master of Arts in Education and are designed for working teachers. Classes meet once a week in the early evening during fall and spring semesters, with varied hours during summer terms. The program does not lead to initial teacher licensure, but is useful for endorsements and professional advancement.

New students may join a cohort in progress or enroll for a single course only by permission of the program's director.  Each semester's courses are announced by the Registrar's Office.

The American History program takes three calendar years to complete. Licensed teachers who complete the history program will meet the federal definition of "well qualified" in history.

The Reading program usually takes about two calendar years to complete. Licensed teachers who complete the reading program qualify to be certified as Reading Specialists in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Some school districts assist their teachers with tuition costs. Be sure to check with your district to see what support they will offer.

Admission requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a minimum GPA of 2.75 overall and 3.0 in the major, completion of the Graduate Record Examination, submission of a writing sample, and review by an admissions committee. For experienced teachers and individuals of exceptional promise, the committee may modify the GPA requirement. Prospective graduate students must provide three recommendations from people familiar with their work, a completed application for graduate admissions, official transcripts from all colleges attended, and official copies of all professional assessments they have completed.
