The Program Interview

All teacher preparation students, both undergraduate and graduate, must complete a Program Interview. Check with your advisor regarding when you should schedule your interview. Students usually interview at least two semesters before the student teaching (professional) semester. This interview is required prior to formal acceptance into the teacher education program.  The purpose of the interview is to review your progress in fulfilling requirements for acceptance into the teacher preparation program.

                                                        Preparing for your interview

What we do in the Neff Education Center:

  • Check your record to see if you have filed paperwork to list your major and teacher education area correctly with the Registrar.
  • Check your class standing and your GPA.
  • Check with the Dean of Students office for a reference and recommendation.
  • Check to see if you have a Search of the Central Registry and a Praxis score report on file.
  • Make sure you have filed a copy of your VCLA and RVE score reports.
  • Review your list of coursework and current class schedule.
  • Send you e-mail letting you know that times for interviews are available so you can schedule your interview.

What you need to do:

  • Check with your advisor to be sure when you need to register and register on time.
  • Schedule a time for your interview as soon as you are notifed that interview times are available and pick up your interview packet to fill out and return to the Neff Center Office.
  • Complete and return your Personal Statement in support of your desire to teach. This statement must be handwritten.
  • Complete and return your Health Form.  In most cases, the Student Health Center can complete this form for you.
  • Review your Checklist for Program Completion to be sure it is up to date.  See your advisor before your interview if you have questions regarding anything on the Checklist.
  • Check your e-mail so that you do not miss important information.  We will send e-mails with scheduling and other information for your interview.
  • Arrive on time! You should come dressed for a professional interview and be prepared to answer questions about your program and your career choices. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions of your interview committee.
