Emory & Henry provides Virginia and TEAC approved initial teacher licensure programs in elementary/middle grades PK-8, and secondary programs (6-12) in a variety of teaching majors. Each of our programs meets or exceeds the requirements for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Programs are described in detail in the college catalog, available on line or upon request from the Admissions Office.

In addition to Virginia initial licensure programs, Emory & Henry offers a Fast Track M.Ed. in Professional Studies. This program does not include the content knowledge area for licensure, but it provides pedagogical and practicum training and experience. For students who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree in a teaching major, this M.Ed. facilitates the graduate's application for a teaching license.

Students who wish to teach in the elementary/middle grades choose from three interdisciplinary majors that combine English and language arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. Each of the three majors is named for its primary focus, but each also incorporates significant work in the other fields. These majors include:

  • Interdisciplinary English
  • Interdisciplinary Social Studies
  • Interdisciplinary Mathematics

Students planning to teach in secondary school, grades 6-12, choose from these majors:

  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Earth Science
  • English
  • Geography
  • History and Social Science
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

We also have multi-level programs in which students prepare to teach at all grade levels, PK-12. These include:

  • Art
  • Modern foreign language, French or Spanish
  • Music - Choral/Vocal
  • Music - Instrumental
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Special Education - General Curriculum

For students who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree in a teaching major, this M.Ed. facilitates the graduate's application for a teaching license:

  • Fast Track M.Ed. in Professional Studies, elementary/middle or secondary
