The stunning vistas surrounding an outdoor Emory & Henry College research center served as a backdrop for the signing Saturday of a declaration committing the college to an environmental protection action plan.
Emory & Henry College President Jake Schrum signed the The Talloires Declaration surrounded by numerous alumni of the College’s Environmental Studies Program. The signing of the agreement was held during a reunion of the alumni at the E&H Bartlett-Crowe Field Station, 90 acres of rolling, forested property south of Glade Spring.
Under the agreement, Emory & Henry joins other college and university leaders from across the country in declaring their support for a sustainable environmental future. Institutions that sign the agreement declaration agree to, among other action, increase awareness of environmentally sustainable development, create an institutional culture of sustainability, and educate for an environmentally responsible citizenship.
The agreement also calls upon institutions to practice institutional ecology, involve all stakeholders in the institution in the effort, and establish partnerships with primary and secondary schools to help develop the capacity for interdisciplinary teaching about environmental challenges.
