A gift from an Emory & Henry College alumnus and his spouse has established an endowed award for outstanding students majoring in biology and chemistry at the institution.

The Buchanan Memorial Endowed Awards in Biology and Chemistry honor Matthew Hay and Elizabeth Goode Buchanan, Benjamin Keys Buchanan and Rachel Goode Buchanan – early settlers of Washington County, Va. – and their descendants. The Buchanans were brothers and the Goodes were sisters.

The awards are made possible through the generosity of Bob B. Buchanan, a member of the E&H Class of 1958 who was a double major in biology and chemistry, and Melinda S. Buchanan.

The awards, which will be presented annually at the College’s awards day ceremony, will be bestowed to outstanding students at the discretion of faculty members in the Biology and Chemistry Departments.
