Jamie Smyth, the editor and art director of the E&H alumni magazine, “Emory & Henry,” and Monica Hoel, alumni editor, claimed two of the six Award of Excellence honors given at the ceremony out of more than 90 entries from numerous organizations, businesses, universities and marketing companies from throughout Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. The Award of Excellence is the highest award given by the PRSA, followed by the Award of Quality and the Award of Merit.
The award recognized the spring 2015 issue of the alumni magazine, the cover story for which focused on the 15th anniversary of the E&H Environmental Studies Program. Also honored was the fall 2015 of the magazine, which focused on the opening of the new Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts.
Judges, who are located in California, praised the publications for their use of photography and graphics, organization, and the quality of writing and editing.
Smyth, who has worked in the E&H Public Relations Office for 19 years, has won numerous honors for her design work. She became editor of the magazine two years ago after serving as its chief designer and art director.
“The alumni magazine has experienced dramatic improvement since Jamie became editor of the magazine,” said Dirk Moore, director of public relations and senior writer for the publication. “From the artwork to the design to the story selection, this alumni publication is easily among the best small-college alumni magazines in the country.”
