The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students directs and coordinates student programs of Emory & Henry College personally or through subordinate supervisors. Also, she advises the Board of Trustees regarding the formulation and development of student personnel policies. She directs and assists in planning social, recreational, and curricular programs. The Dean counsels or advises individuals and groups on matters pertaining to personal problems, educational and vocational objectives, social and recreational activities, and financial assistance.
Pam Gourley was named Dean of Students at Emory & Henry in 1999. She added the title Vice President for Student Life in 2007. Prior to her arrival at E&H, she worked at North Carolina Wesleyan College for twelve years, having served as a residence hall director, director of campus recreation, director of campus activities, Assistant and Associate Dean of Students, and Interim Vice President and Dean of Students. While at North Carolina Wesleyan, she received the Distinguished Staff Member Award (1993-94). Dean Gourley received her B.A. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Master’s Degree in Recreational Resources from North Carolina State University. She has served as a volunteer mediator, a United Way Loaned Executive, as well as a facilitator in staff and student training sessions on various topics. She has also served as a presenter on the Leadership Practices Inventory for the Mid-Atlantic Health Leadership Institute through Johns Hopkins University since 1998.
