Financial Aid/Scholarships
Q: What scholarships does Emory & Henry offer?
A: Emory & Henry awards merit scholarships based on a combination of GPA and test scores. Additional grants may be awarded based on financial need.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?
A: The Financial Aid Office automatically reviews all accepted students for college scholarships and grants. You do not need to fill out a separate application for most merit-based awards. However, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for federal and need-based funds; and you must file the appropriate state aid applications to be considered for assistance from Virginia, if applicable.

Q: If I am from Virginia, what state aid application will I need to complete?
A: All full-time Virginians must file the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program application with the College. This application is due by July 31.

Q: Is my financial aid renewable each year?
A: Most college programs, as well as the Virginia Tuition Assistance grant, are renewable for three additional years, provided the student is enrolled full-time and maintains satisfactory academic progress according to college guidelines. Generally no renewal application is necessary in these cases. However, you must reapply each year for all federal and need-based programs, and for various other programs.

Q: I don't think that I will qualify for financial aid, should I still apply?
A: Yes! Numerous pieces of information are used to determine a student's need for financial aid. Many families believe that their income excludes them from financial aid eligibility, but in fact, a large majority of Emory & Henry applicants and students qualify for need-based funds.

Q: What is the deadline for applying for financial aid?
A: While there is no strict deadline, Emory & Henry recommends that new students complete the FAFSA form by February 15. Returning students should complete the application no later than April 1st. To find out if you qualify for financial aid, file the appropriate applications as early as possible. Aid is normally awarded first to students who apply for consideration before the suggested deadlines, and, in the case of need-based funds, those who demonstrate the greatest financial need. Failing to file or filing late may mean missing out on aid.

Q: Will an outside scholarship affect my financial aid package?
A: In many cases it will not. In those cases where we are required to reduce part of our previous award, Emory & Henry first reduces student loans and/or work if you still have remaining financial need. Only where absolutely necessary will we reduce a scholarship or grant. Any time an award or change to an award is made, we will provide a revised financial aid award letter that will include a breakdown of the award.

Q: Are there any resources I can access to pursue outside scholarships?
A: There are numerous scholarship search engines online that can help in your search for outside funding. In particular students should check out www.finaid.org and www.fastweb.com. Information on Emory & Henry scholarships can be viewed here.

Q: What type of aid does Emory & Henry offer for summer school?
A: Students may choose from a variety of alternative loan programs for summer school. Alternative Loans generally require a co-signer and credit approval. No other type of financial aid is available for these terms. Applications can be obtained directly from the Financial Aid Office. Summer school loan applications must be received by April 1st.

Q: How will moving off campus affect my financial aid package?
A: If you are thinking about changing your residency status as an upperclassman, it is important that you check with the Financial Aid Office to see how it may affect your award package. Your need will be lower since your charges will be lower (you will now only be charged for tuition and the appropriate fees), we may have to make adjustments to either grants or loans.

Q: Does Emory & Henry offer workstudy?
A: Yes. Workstudy is awarded based on financial need. When students arrive on campus at the start of the academic year, they must actively search for employment on their own. The Human Resources Office maintains a listing of available campus jobs. Students are also encouraged to inquire at the individual departments and may be asked to complete an application or interview for the position.

Q: What's the FAFSA?
A: FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's the form the federal government and schools use to determine your eligibility for financial assistance. Schools also base their financial aid package on the FAFSA. And, as the name implies, the FAFSA is completely free.

Academics
Q: Does your institution offer academic services for students with disabilities?
A: Services for students with disabilities are offered through the Paul Adrian Powell III Resource Center. Admitted students with diagnosed disabilities, who wish to have accommodations made for their disability, should contact the Director of Academic Support Services. Students with diagnosed learning disabilities must submit a copy of their psycho-educational testing results. The results should be dated no earlier than three years before the date of matriculation. Although Emory & Henry does not offer a special program for students with disabilities, reasonable accommodations in regular courses will be permitted based on the specific disability and the recommendations of the consulting doctor. It is the student's responsibility to speak to his or her professors and to the Director of Academic Support Services to arrange for any necessary accommodations that may benefit performance in the student's course work.

Residence Life
Q: What is the housing policy?
A: Emory & Henry requires that all students live in college-owned residences except for those students who reside with their parents, guardians, or spouses; those 22 years of age or older; part-time students with eight or fewer semester hours; or those students who have special medical or personal considerations which cannot be accommodated on campus (specific documentation will be required). A waiver must be signed in the Office of Student Life for approval for every student living off campus.

If the Residence Requirement waiver is not completed, the student will be billed for room and board.

Part-time students, special students and fifth-year seniors who wish to reside in college-owned residence halls may apply and be granted approval to live in college facilities if space is available.
Boarding. Every residential student will be required to participate in the college meal plan. Appeals for medical and/or financial exception (with appropriate documentation) will be reviewed by the Office of the Dean of Students.
