Beth A Funkhouser

Pre-Health Director & Advisor Exercise & Health Science
Beth Funkhouser currently serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at Emory & Henry College. In addition to her work with Emory & Henry’s Exercise & Health Sciences and the Pre-Health Program, she is a first-year and pre-health advisor who also formerly served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in the E&H Athletic Department.   
An athletic trainer for over 20 years, Dr. Funkhouser has worked in the secondary school, collegiate, and academic settings. An active advocate for the profession, she is proud to have served two terms as the Secretary of the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association.  Funkhouser is a 2002 graduate of E&H with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and Physical Education and earned a Master of Education degree in Kinesiology-Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Athletic Training degree from AT Still University-Arizona School of Health Sciences.  
Additionally, Dr. Funkhouser is an active member of the National Association for the Advisors of Health Professions (NAAHP), National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), Southeast American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM), the British Association of Sport Rehabilitation and Trainers (BASRaT), and a professional member of the National Academies of Practice in the Athletic Training Academy.

Dr. Funkhouser currently teaches courses in Exercise Science,  Health Sciences, General Studies, Health & Human Performance, and the Core. 

Professional Experience

Previously Funkhouser was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Washington County School System,  an assistant athletic trainer at Emory & Henry College, and at Hampden-Sydney College.

In addition to being a certified and licensed athletic trainer, she holds certifications as a strength & conditioning specialist (CSCS), corrective exercise specialist (CES), and phlebotomy technician (CPT).
