Biography

With a professional background in magazines and public relations, Dr. Lauder’s experiences includes being a writer and editor at Southern Living magazine and running a freelance writing and consulting business. Her teaching interests include media literacy, persuasive communication, print design, and women’s studies. She is particularly interested in how the mass media shape culture and influence behavior.

Research:

Dr. Lauder has published on the start-up of Southern Living magazine in 1960s Birmingham and the wide-reaching influence of this regional lifestyle guide. In particular, her work has looked at not only the business decisions of this magazine, but also the portrayal of Southerners within its pages.

Student Research:

Assistance has been provided for various projects, including the history of Walt Disney, media messages targeted to teenagers, and media literacy programming.

Upcoming Research:

Currently Dr. Lauder is exploring the power of mass-mediated heroes in American culture, from Princess Diana to preteen Disney icons. In addition, she is studying the increasing consumer culture surrounding weddings as has been created by the mass media industry.
