Dr. Robert Matthews, a native of Carthage, NC, is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at Emory & Henry College in Emory, VA. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting (2011) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Music Education (1999) and the Master of Music in Music Education (2005) from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He also was a piano student at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France during the summer of 1998. After graduating from Appalachian, Dr. Matthews taught choral music for seven years at North Wilkes High School in Hays, NC and was the Minister of Music at Hinshaw Street Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, NC. Dr. Matthews has served as an accompanist for the North Carolina High School All-State Women’s Choir, NC Middle School Honors Chorus, NC Middle School All-State Choir, and the American Choral Directors Association’s Male Vocal Arts Symposium. During the summer of 2008, Dr. Matthews was a Conducting Apprentice at the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield, MA where he was given the Charles Dodsley Walker Award. During the 2009-2010 academic year, Dr. Matthews served as the assistant conductor of Bel Canto Company, a Greensboro based professional choir, and taught choral music at Greensboro Day School. He is currently a tenor vocalist with Brethren, a Washington, DC based professional Christian men’s choir.
Dr. Matthews’ most recent professional activities include an art song recital with Dr. Lisa Withers, Associate Professor of Music and Piano and chair of the Division of Visual and Performing Arts Department. The program included works such as Monteverdi’s “Zefiro torna,” Schubert’s “Erlkönig,” Debussy’s “Nuit d’étoiles,” Fauré’s “Clair de lune,” Finzi’s Let Us Garlands Bring, Handel’s aria “Waft her, angels, through the skies” from Jephtha, several arrangements of popular Italian art songs arranged by local composer Dr. Scott Gendel, and “What Do I Need With Love” from Thoroughly Modern Millie.
This summer, Dr. Matthews will be participating in the Vancouver International Song Institute’s French Mélodie Immersion Program at the University of British Columbia and the Tallis Scholars Summer School at Seattle University.
