ITALY | ART 322

This course meets during the fall semester to provide a background for the trip to Italy. During winter vacation, students travel to Rome, Florence and Pompeii to study Italian art in the context in which it was created. Students compare ancient classicism of Roman sculpture, painting and architecture with the newer forms created in the Renaissance and Baroque Periods.

Visits to Florence and Pompeii illustrate the rebirth of classical forms at different time periods in history. Students study important works, including those by Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, Ghiberti, Raphael, Botticelli, Bramante, Brunelleschi, Michelozzo, Bernini, and Caravaggio. In addition, students are assigned several important afternoon sites to visit and report on. Scholarships are available.

Next offering: Fall 2008
