Public Education Service Opportunities

Emory & Henry Tutoring Program Carolyn Wilson
Tutors serve in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Washington and Smyth Counties, and at Highlands Project and Star Mountain Club. Students typically tutor in math or reading and serve a minimum of two hours a week.

Highlands Project for Public Education, Lisa Bourne
Highlands Project for Public Education is a place-based, student-centered after-school program serving third through eighth grade students from Meadowview Elementary and Glade Spring Middle Schools. The program meets on campus Monday through Thursday from three to six, and mentors are expected to serve at least two days per week.

Star Mountain Club Reading Buddy, Carolyn Wilson
Star Mountain Club is an after-school program at Marion Primary School. Volunteers are needed to read aloud to groups of students, work with small groups of students on reading skills, or work individually with students. Reading buddies serve on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and students will be reimbursed for mileage traveled to Marion Primary.

Lunch Buddy Program, Carolyn Wilson
Volunteers eat lunch with an elementary, middle, or high school student in need of extra one-on-one attention. Volunteers visit their lunch buddies twice per week.

Star Mountain Club Enrichment Projects, Lisa Bourne
Star Mountain Club at Marion Primary School is interested in having E&H students help them with several enrichment opportunities including:
  • Directing a Play, called North Star

  • Foreign Language Workshops

  • Physical Education Activities

  • Art Projects and Lessons

  • Music Workshops

  • Science Projects and Lessons

  • All Ideas are Welcome
